Tips for Parents

Readable, practical ideas you can try tonight — no jargon, just what works for many families.

1) Sleep Routines That Stick

Keep a predictable 20–30 minute wind-down. Use the same order and a consistent goodnight phrase.

  • Bath/wash-up → pajamas → teeth → 1–2 books → lights out.
  • Use a visual chart kids can “check off”.
  • White noise + blackout curtains reduce night waking.

2) Calming Big Feelings

Connection first. When emotions spike, the thinking brain is offline. Your calm co‑regulates.

  • Acknowledge: “You wanted the red cup.”
  • Offer a simple choice: “Walk or I carry.”
  • Reduce input: step aside, lower voice, slow breathing.

3) Routines with Visuals

Visual schedules make transitions predictable. Keep steps short and concrete with icons/photos.

  • Morning: toilet → clothes → breakfast → shoes → out the door.
  • Use “First → Then” boards for tricky moments.

4) Screen Time with Intention

  • 3-2-1 rule: 3x/week co‑view, 2 daily no‑screen windows, no screens 1 hour before bed.
  • Keep devices in a common “home” (basket/shelf) and charge there.

5) Communication Boosters

  • Follow their lead in play; narrate what you both do.
  • Offer choices (two items in view) to invite communication.
  • Consider AAC early — it supports, not blocks, speech.
